Receptionists
Jillian Read, Rhona Rourke and Sue Horner are here to help you. They
have a very difficult job to do whilst striving to provide a high quality standard of care. To that end, they
may need to ask for medical details in order to assess the urgency of a request. Please be as helpful as you
can and remember that they are always working under the instructions of the doctors.
All our receptionists are bound by the same rules of confidentiality as the doctors.
Attached Staff
Health Visitors
The health visitors are experts on child health care and carry out immunisations, development checks and impartial
general advice every Tuesday morning. They can be contacted at Yarnspinners on 01282 657600.
Midwives
The Brier Team midwives at Burnley General Hospital or Airedale General Hospital provide our midwifery
services, which include pre-conceptual, antenatal and postnatal care. The Brier Team holds a clinic at the
surgery every Thursday morning. The Burnley midwives can be contacted on 01282 474232 / 474233 and the Airdale midwives on 01282 817519.
Phlebotomist
A clinic is held twice a week to take blood tests which have been requested by the GP or nurse.
District Nurses
The district nurses specialise in assessing and providing nursing care to those who are housebound and
therefore unable to attend the surgery. They will give support and advice to patients and carers and will
liaise with other agencies on your behalf. They can be contacted at Yarnspinners between 8.00am and 4.00pm on
01282 657762.
Community Matron
The community matron's aim is to support patients to manage their long term conditions and avoid
the necessity for hospital admission.
Dietician
The dietician holds a clinic once a month to give generalised and specialist dietary advice. Referral is
made either by the doctor or nurse.
Pharmacist
The practice pharmacist facilitates the co-ordination of prescribing within the practice and deals with
regular medication reviews by appointment.
Medical Students
Barrowford Surgery is a teaching practice and we are fortunate to have medical students attached to us for
short periods. When booking your appointment you may be informed that your doctor will have a student present
during your consultation, or that a student may actually be scheduled to see you in a preliminary consultation
as part of their training syllabus.
Whilst the co-operation of our patients is highly valued for these student participation consultations, you
are nevertheless free to decline any such offer. Simply inform the receptionist that you would prefer to see
the doctor alone.
